The Life Journey of Zhu Shuzhen, the Heartbreak Poetess

Zhu Shuzhen (c. 1135-c. 1180), art name Youqi Jushi, was a native of Qiantang (Hangzhou) and one of the great woman poets of the Southern Song, ranked with Li Qingzhao. Brilliant across classics, poetry, painting and music, she was married by parental decree to a vulgar clerk who never understood her; her whole life's sorrow went into verse of grief for spring and loneliness of the boudoir. Her Broken-Heart Ci and Poems survive as works of piercing sincerity — she is remembered as 'the Broken-Heart Talent.'

Timeline of the Journey

  • 1135 · 杭州 — Born to an official family in Qiantang; trained in classics, verse, painting and music, her girlhood by West Lake was all brilliance and promise.
  • 1155 · 杭州 — Compelled by her parents to marry a philistine clerk — a union without one word in common, the wound of her life; her palette turned from bright to mournful.
  • 1160 · 杭州 — Following her husband's posting away from home, she filled her travel poems with homesickness and the ache of her mismatched marriage — the 'Ye Jin Men: Mid-Spring' among them.
  • 1165 · 杭州 — Back in Hangzhou and estranged, she took the name 'Youqi Jushi' ('Dweller in Seclusion') and lived alone with her art.
  • 1170 · 杭州 — Through the 1170s her broken-heart ci won ever wider fame; walking the lake, she fused its light and water with her grief.
  • 1175 · 杭州 — In failing health she wrote on, her late verse ever darker and truer; she began gathering her manuscripts, mourning the early ones already scattered.
  • 1178 · 杭州 — On her sickbed she wrote her farewell poems — a life's reckoning, talent chained by marriage, with verse for sole confidant.
  • 1180 · 杭州 — Died in Hangzhou around 1180, aged about forty-five; her parents burned her papers, but the friend Wei Zhonggong saved what circulated and printed the Broken-Heart Collection.

'I press the qin, the tune is grief itself; I lean on the railing, weary through and through.' Zhu Shuzhen turned a stifled life into some of the most affecting verse by any woman of the Song — the poetry survives the sorrow, and outlives it.
