The Life Journey of Zhang Xiaoxiang, the Bold Lyricist
Zhang Xiaoxiang (1132-1170), courtesy name Anguo, art name Yuhu Jushi, was a native of Wujiang, Hezhou (present-day He County, Anhui) — a celebrated Southern Song poet and calligrapher. He took first place (zhuangyuan) in the palace examination of 1154 at twenty-three and rose to Academician of the Xianmo Pavilion. An unwavering advocate of resisting the Jin who plotted recovery with Zhang Jun, his bold and expansive ci inherited the mantle of Su Shi and blazed the trail for Xin Qiji, making him a pioneer of the heroic school in Southern Song lyric.
Timeline of the Journey
- 1132 · 和县 — Born in Wujiang, Hezhou; a prodigy of photographic memory who adored Su Shi's prose and excelled in calligraphy after Yan Zhenqing and Mi Fu.
- 1154 · 临安(状元) — Personally elevated to zhuangyuan by Emperor Gaozong — over the head of Qin Hui's grandson — a verdict that stunned the court.
- 1159 · 建康 — Governed Jiankang (Nanjing) as acting capital warden, repairing defenses, relieving refugees, and planning the northern expedition with Zhang Jun.
- 1163 · 潭州 — Administered Tanzhou (Changsha), taming floods and lightening taxes; after the failed Longxing campaign he wrote grief-laden verse on the war.
- 1165 · 桂林 — Governed Jingjiang (Guilin) as Pacification Commissioner, tending the southern frontier even while admiring its scenery.
- 1168 · 洞庭湖 — Crossing Lake Dongting on a mid-autumn night of mirror-still water, he composed 'Nian Nu Jiao — Passing Dongting,' crowned the finest ci ever written on the lake.
- 1169 · 芜湖 — Retired to the Wuhu lakeside as 'Yuhu Jushi,' painting, drinking and still paling at every border dispatch.
- 1170 · 芜湖(病逝) — Died at Wuhu in 1170 at only thirty-nine, leaving over two hundred ci that form the crucial bridge from Su Shi to Xin Qiji.
From the zhuangyuan examination halls to the moon-washed expanse of Lake Dongting, Zhang Xiaoxiang's thirty-eight years burned bright and brief. 'All of this we hold within our breast,' he sang of the lake's vastness — a poet whose integrity was as lucid as that mid-autumn water.
