The Life Journey of Zhou Bangyan, the Patriarch of Ci Poetry
Zhou Bangyan (1056-1121), courtesy name Meicheng, art name Qingzhen Jushi, was a native of Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou) and the supreme technical master of the Northern Song lyric. Entering the Imperial Academy in 1079, he rose to Directing Minister of the Dasheng Music Bureau. His ci gathered the grace of the restrained school to its consummation — exact in musical prosody, rigorous in structure, masterly in unfolding — so that later ages revered him as 'the Patriarch of Ci Poets,' and his Qingzhen Ci stands as the technical summit of Song lyric art.
Timeline of the Journey
Born to a merchant household in Qiantang, absorbing both the beauty of lake and hills and the music of city streets.
Entered the Imperial Academy at Kaifeng; his ten-thousand-word 'Rhapsody on the Southern Capital' astonished Emperor Shenzong and lifted him from student to official in one stroke.
Posted to Luzhou (Hefei) and other prefectures, his verse turned from rhapsodic splendor toward the dense, plangent Qingzhen manner.
Governed Lishui with quiet justice, writing the limpid 'Man Ting Fang' — 'wind ripens the orioles, rain fattens the plums' — a signature of his art.
Administered Jingzhou on the Jianghan plain, absorbing the ancient vastness of Chu into his stanzas.
Governed Longdefu amid the Taihang ranges, adding the austerity of the north to the delicacy of the south.
Called back to Kaifeng as Directing Minister of the Dasheng Bureau, he codified the tonal patterns of ci, giving the art rules to live by.
Died in Kaifeng at sixty-six as the dynasty tottered — his late verse already tinged with twilight, a few years before the fall of the north.
Zhou Bangyan walked from the canal-songs of Hangzhou to the ceremonial halls of the Dasheng Bureau, perfecting ci as a craft of precision. Where Su Shi set the lyric free, Zhou gave it architecture — and every meticulous word-smith of the Southern Song stood, knowingly, in his shadow.
